There are two methods you can employ to install new software in Ubuntu. You can use the Synaptic / Adept Package Manager GUI or you can install software via the command line in a Terminal Session.

To access the Synaptic / Adept Package Manager:

1. Click System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager.
2. Find a package you want to install.
3. Right click and select "Mark For Installation".
4. Click the Apply button to begin installation.

To install software via a Terminal Session:

> sudo apt-get install <package name>

Installing software through a Terminal Session requires knowledge of the command line.
